Interpretation: From Theory to Practice

Abstract

The talk aims to discuss in response to the basic notions and theories in the field of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, and more importantly, to unravel the processes of this linguistic task for practitioners. Important topics include the definition, the interpreter’s maxim, interpreting stages, analysis of speech types, re-expression, and helpful suggestions. The talk will be organized in an interactive way in which the theories will be discussed in close conjunction with sharing of the ideas and experiences between the presenter and the audience throughout the talk. Regarding the theories in particular, the presenter as an interpreter from English into Thai and vice versa will reflect what and how he has done in relation to and, at times, in departure from them.

Dr. Somboon Pojprasat [English Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Mahidol University, Thailand]

Somboon Pojprasat is a lecturer of English language and literature at the Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Mahidol University, Thailand. He obtained two bachelor’s degrees in English and French, a Master’s degree in English from Thai universities, and a doctoral degree in English from the University of Bristol, UK. He has extensive experience in teaching English language and literature and translation both in literary and non-literary texts. Courses taught include Fundamental English, English Structure, Pragmatics, Situation-Based Communicative English, Introduction to Literature, American Literature, and Seminar in Liberal Arts. Besides, he is a poet.
